Dream Model Street School

[title]

Description

DREAM MODEL STREET SCHOOLDream Model Street School was established in 2003, with the support from a few like-minded girls, started a school to educate street children. The school lies in a peri-urban and neglected area of Muwach Goth which is populated by 90,000 souls[1]. Majority of the residents works on daily wages in the factories and mills to eke out living and support their families. Due to absence of official statistics, it is hard to estimate the literacy rate in the area. However, according to conservative estimates, literacy rate is 40% that also includes 15% girls. There is only one government primary school in Muwach Goth, but it is not functional and remains closed. Two private schools cater to the needs of only the rich and these remain inaccessible by the majority who are extremely poor. With a revolutionary vision and powerful will, we set out to run the school in 2003. Within a very short span of two years, our efforts began materializing our dream and the parents in the surroundings started sending their children to our school. Recognizing the efforts of the young girl and observing the positive impact on literacy, a local organization, ARM, visited the school in 2005. Impressed by the quality of education imparted and the dedication of the young teachers, Within next five years, the school saw rise in enrolment of students. Being the only street school in the area to provide very quality education, it also attracted students from well-established private schools. However, with an increasing preference of parents for getting their children enrolled in this school, premises of the school fell short of accommodating so many students. [1] Pakistan Census 1998

The Dream Model Street School is in one of Karachi’s many slum settlements. When Humaira was growing up there was no one living in the area who could read or write and non of the local children went to school. The school has already educated 2,000 students who otherwise wouldn’t have had access to education. The school has a staff of 22 teachers, aged between 13 and 24. The teachers work for free and donate any spare cash towards the fund to buy a plot of land so they can build their own school.
